Twin Screw Pumps for Sanitary Processing

Bornemann Twin Screw Pump Overview

Twin screw pumps provide exceptional versatility in sanitary processing, delivering smooth, pulse-free flow that gently handles everything from thin liquids to high-viscosity products.

Their unique intermeshing screw design allows the same pump to move product at low RPM during processing and operate at high RPM for CIP, enabling many facilities to replace two separate pumps with a single, efficient solution. Built for cleanability, reliability, and wide operating range, twin screw pumps offer a powerful combination of performance and flexibility across food, beverage, dairy, and pharmaceutical applications.

Bornemann Twin Screw Pump

Key Features

  • Performance Boost:
    • Bornemann Pump Series SLH-5G provides enlarged performance by increasing the size of the hydraulic. Better performance with the same reliability Bornemann is known for.
  • Continuous Technical Developments:
    • Bornemann uses the experience of previous generations and market developments to optimize the pump design in: • Efficiency • Thermal Shocks • Flexibility in Connection
  • Built-in Exchangeability:
    • SLH-5G design allows a built-in exchange with all predecessor Bornemann SLH-Series pumps without additional adaptations. Enabling easy drop-in and replacement with previous generations and installed piping dimensions.
  • Excellent Maintenance Design:
    • The newly patented Bornemann design without disassembly of the bearing unit for efficient maintenance.
  • Smooth Operation:
    • Reduces slip pulse in low inlet pressure, low viscosity, and high pressure conditions.
  • Reduced Noise Levels:
    • Operating principle virtually eliminates pressure fluctuations.

User Advantages

  • Product Protective Procedure:
    • To avoid any waste of the product, the reverse operation allows to empty the suction piping from the product, before starting the cleaning process.
  • Abrasive Conveying:
    • Different material options allow for conveyance of abrasive products and avoid contamination of the product.
  • High Temperature Differences:
    • The design and material choices allow maximum temperature differences from 4°C to 95°C (39°F to 203°F), empowering a problem-free, high temperature cleaning process subsequent to the conveying process.
  • High Viscosity:
    • The open suction layout allows a seamless alignment directly to the collection unit of the pumped product to provide the best possible reception of highly viscous products.
  • Highly Sterile:
    • The conveying process with sterilized products is supported by a vapor barrier, designed to ensure the sterile condition of the product.
  • Stable Temperature:
    • Heating jackets provide a constant temperature of the product to allow for an efficient and gentle conveyance.
  • Constant Flow:
    • The optimized backflow screw selection guarantees constant flow rates for metering or feeding UHT to ensure a constant temperature level despite variation in pressure or viscosity.

Theory of Operation:

Twin Screw Pumps

Twin screw pumps operate using two intermeshing, non-contacting screws that rotate in opposite directions within a precision-machined pump housing. As the screws turn, they form sealed cavities that gently convey product from the suction side to the discharge side in a smooth, pulse-free flow. Because the screws do not touch each other or the housing, the pump handles shear-sensitive, abrasive, and particulate-laden fluids with minimal wear and extremely low shear.

A defining feature of twin screw technology — and a core advantage of the Bornemann Twin Screw Pump — is its ability to run at a wide speed range. At low RPM, it provides gentle product handling for viscous foods, creams, slurries, and delicate solids. At high RPM, the same pump transitions into a powerful CIP booster, allowing facilities to use one pump for both process and CIP. This eliminates the need for a separate centrifugal CIP pump and reduces system complexity, downtime, and cleaning changeover steps.

The non-contacting screw design also ensures excellent cleanability. The pump is fully CIP capable, self-draining when properly installed, and engineered to minimize product hold-up. Waukesha’s precision screw geometry and tight tolerances improve volumetric efficiency, allowing accurate, consistent flow across a wide range of viscosities — from water-like liquids to thick pastes.

With its combination of versatility, hygienic performance, smooth flow, and high-pressure capability, the Waukesha Universal Twin Screw Pump offers a highly flexible solution for modern sanitary processing environments.

Bornemann Twin Screw Operation

In 2004, Bornemann introduced the hygienic SLH design of Twin Screw Pumps to the Food & Pharma industries. Its design is based on more than 165 years of proven technology of Bornemann Industrial Twin Screw Pumps, aligned with the special hygienic requirements of Food, Pharma and Chemical operations. It has been continuously improved to meet the requirements of our global customers.
